Crouch End Festival Chorus is now one of the country’s leading symphonic choirs, a result achieved under the exclusive direction of David Temple. His imaginative and innovative programme planning, including several ambitious commissions, have brought the choir to the forefront of music-making in the UK.

David came to London in 1972 and joined the London Philharmonic Choir where he sang as a tenor under the chorus master John Alldis: he performed with many great conductors including Boult, Stokowski, Solti, Haitink, Tennstedt, Barenboim, Giulini and Rattle. In 1984 he began his work with the newly formed Crouch End Festival Chorus. Over the past five years the choir has progressed from being a reputable local choral society to become a choir of international standing.

David’s teenage years were filled with pop music so the choir’s work with Neil Hannon and The Divine Comedy on their album Fin de Siecle has rekindled these early influences. As chorus master of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival David worked closely with Ray Davies of the Kinks on his choral work The Flatlands and again recently on his first solo album.

David’s recent work with Crouch End Festival Chorus includes Mahler’s 8th Symphony to a sell-out Royal Festival Hall, Bach’s Mass in B minor in Symphony Hall Birmingham and John Adams’ Choruses from Klinghoffer at the Barbican. In July David returned to the Royal Festival Hall to present the world premiere of Orlando Gough’s Shift, CEFC’s latest commission, together with Stravinsky’s Les Noces. The chorus is much sought after by recording companies and concert promoters.

David is also Musical Director of the Hertfordshire Chorus. His first season included a tour to Southern Spain and sell-out concerts including 2001 - a Film Odyssey with Barry Norman, and a critically acclaimed performance of Berlioz’ Grande Messe des Morts in St Albans Cathedral. David’s next concert is on 15th January 2005 at St Albans Cathedral performing Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. Last month saw the release of a new CD, Will Todd’s Mass in Blue. Hertfordshire Chorus’s next commission is a flamenco choral ballet by Howard Haigh to be premiered next July in Cambridge.

David led a highly successful CEFC tour of Italy two years ago, giving four performances of Monteverdi, Pergolesi and Handel in Perugia, Assisi, Castiglione del Lago and Rome: most recently David led CEFC on tour in July 2004 to south-eastern Spain.

David is a regular visitor to Dartington where this year he worked on Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass. He has been invited there next year to conduct Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem. David also works regularly with the Northern Sinfonia.
