Berlioz: Grande Messe des Morts
Saturday 9 October, 7.30pm | Barbican, London
Crouch End Festival Chorus
London Orchestra da Camera
David Temple conductor
Robert Murray tenor
Anyone who witnessed the Berlioz Te Deum at the 2009 BBC Proms (featuring CEFC among its five choirs) may be surprised to know that the Te Deum has an even bigger ‘brother’, the Grande Messe des Morts.
Berlioz’s vision of death and the afterlife is of epic proportions. As well as the enormous choir and orchestra, brass ensembles fire off fanfares from the four corners of the concert hall. Berlioz also calls for a vast array of percussion including sixteen timpani.
This unbelievable “surround sound” provides an unmissable musical and theatrical experience. No wonder the work is a favourite of Matthew Bellamy from Muse, whose own concerts are arguably the modern day equivalent.
