Hailed as a masterpiece of the 20th century choral repertoire, Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass is an exuberant and triumphant celebration of life. Rather than opting for a traditional Latin mass, he used an ancient Slavonic text. Though the music is sacred, the Mass exudes a wild and earthy character.
Beethoven’s Mass in C is the perfect contrast to Janáček. Beethoven said of his Mass that it represented the “true inwardness of religious feeling” and this setting has long been praised for its directness and intense emotional content.
