First performed in 1724 in the St Nicholas Church, Leipzig on Good Friday, Bach’s St John Passion is undoubtedly one of the greatest oratorios of all time. This is the first time that Crouch End Festival Chorus, one of the UK’s leading symphony choirs, has sung the St John Passion in its 26 year history.
The St John Passion describes the last days of Jesus, with text taken from the Gospel According to Saint John. The story is told by Evangelist, in this performance sung by the acclaimed young tenor, Robert Murray. The choir represents different groups in the story – the Disciples, Priests, or simply the crowd. The choir also sings a large number of chorales, the most familiar of which will be a tune known to many as the English hymn, “All glory, laud and honour to Thee, Redeemer King”.
More intimate and concise than the St Matthew Passion, the St John Passion is the perfect prelude to Easter.
